Discipline means obedience to an authority or strict observance of certain rules and regulations. A disciple is expected to obey his teacher or master. So the word "discipline" is derived from disciple. Chaos and confusion are the opposite of discipline. If there is no discipline in a society or an institution every body will suffer. Discipline implies subjection or subordination of one's will to some external authority or to one's own set of imposed rules.
Freedom should not be confused with discipline. Even freedom cannot be enjoyed without discipline .Man is a social being. If each man assets his sweet will there can be no social life. It is necessary to subordinate the individual's will to some extent to the general will of society. This is a necessary compromise without which society cannot exist. This compromise is called as discipline.
There is discipline of the body as well of mind. Disciplined bodies as that of soldiers obey the order like a machine. A disciplined mind is not carried away by fits of anger or passions. This discipline cannot be taught to us others. We have to learn it ourselves. In civil life and administration discipline is of great importance. A small number of policemen control big crowds because of discipline. So discipline is essential for government.
